Thirty Days of Love, Day 19: Write for Love

Date: WhenFriday, Feb 3 – Submit a Letter to the Editor on Marginalized Communities

Staff Member: Communications Technology Associate Ted Resnikoff
Description: Not all communities are facing these difficult economic times on equal footing. Examine the challenges faced by those who are already discriminated against because of their identity by looking at our fact sheet on economic justice in marginalized communities.
To Do: Share the hard facts of discrimination with your community by submitting a letter to the editor using our online tool.

Today I wrote a letter to the editor of three local news publications. I wanted the contents of the letter to be powerful and its message to be read and understood not only by the people who agree with me that hard economic times are harder on everyone whose identity does not hew to the mainstream. I wanted people to consider that immigrants, minorities and members of the LGBT community are disproportionately hit whether times are good or bad, only when bad they are hit even worse.

It felt like a  daunting task, and I wasn’t confident I could put together the information to be convincing on this point.

The letter writing kit on Standing on the Side of Love made it easy, and I’m proud of the message it helped me craft.

In fact, it was so easy that I’m going to do something I rarely do: ask for help. Please write a letter to the editor of a publication in your community (use the SSL online tool to do it). My letter alone might or might not be published in tomorrow’s paper, but I’ll bet if the editor receives twenty letters like mine today one of them is likely to be published.

–Ted.
