Giving Up Trash for Lent

Living the Wasteless Life by Carter Smith My story actually begins almost a year ago, when one of my Facebook friends posted an article about Lauren Singer, blogger at Trash is For Tossers. She has become well-known in recent years for fitting two years of her trash into a single mason jar. I was astounded because I had never heard of anything like it, even in my growing environmental consciousness within the first year of my college career. Hearing that something known as a “zero waste lifestyle” was possible for people living in industrialized Western societies seemed both outlandish and amazing. From there I spent weeks reading pretty much any literature out there about waste…

Hallowed Growth in NOLA

New Orleans Service Trip by Emily Parker On this small lot in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, organic vegetables grow in rows. Honey bees housed in hives on the lot buzz by, and a bench constructed between cinder blocks doubles as a flower planter. Inside a modest greenhouse, a hodgepodge of reclaimed bathtubs support an aquaculture, growing fish and fertilizing plants symbiotically. David Young, the man behind this and many other community gardens in the Lower Ninth Ward, is taking me and seventeen other Juniata College students on a tour. Spending our spring break in New Orleans for a week of interfaith service and learning, we have just finished our first day of…

By guest blogger Amelia Diehl . -ed I am so grateful to have been able to attend the Unitarian Universalist College of Social Justice‘s Grounded and Resilient Organizer’s Workshop Climate Justice Training in Chicago, IL and feel connected again to a community and to a movement. I think I might have learned more about myself and climate change in that weekend at the GROW training than my few years or so of calling myself an environmentalist, and in ways I could never have predicted. The space created for group reflection allowed me to learn a lot about what it means for me to be involved in the movement, and also to forget about myself at times. Earlier this summer,…

#Commit2Respond   We re-post this message from the Unitarian Universalist Association and other Unitarian Universalist leaders who urge you to act for Climate Justice starting today.– ed. Today is Earth Day, when people all over the planet celebrate our beautiful, life-giving, and fragile Mother Earth. This year our eight Unitarian Universalist organizations teamed up and created an unprecedented network of concern and action: Commit2Respond. Climate Justice Month, which has been running since World Water Day (March 22), ends today-and we ask you to join us in committing to action in the face of climate change! Saving our biosphere is possible, but it will take a paradigm shift and a revolution of values to get there….

Commit 2 Respond for #ClimateJustice

What We Will Make of Our Time on Earth During Climate Justice Month we have reveled in the world we live in. We have embraced its warmth, its greenness, its snow, and its sunshine. We have gazed at waterfalls, fjords, icebergs, and countless other phenomena with glee. What a beautiful earth we inhabit! We have also reckoned. Climate change is real. It is happening, and we cannot stop it. Superman will not be using his super lungs to suck up greenhouse gases and expel them into space. The Planet Express crew will not be moving the earth a few millimeters further away from the sun. Acknowledging it is the first step. Then we reconnected. We reached…

One Youth’s Spiritual Awakening

Spiritual Life and Connection to Everything (We present excerpts of Anna Zimmer’s piece originally on the Huffington Post. -ed.) By contributing writer Anna Zimmer for KidSpirit’s issue, Climate Change: Tending Our Planet. I was not raised in a family where religion played a big role. I have always known that both my parents were Christians at one point in their lives, but they drifted away and by the time I was born, they were both atheists, happy to have their Sunday mornings free of commitments. When I was in elementary school, my mom started going to a church in my town. I didn’t find out what kind of church it was until middle school, when…
