Meet the YMAC

Posted by Carey McDonald // April 25th 2012 // UUA, youth // one comment

As the members of the Youth Ministry Advisory Committee, we help advise the President of the Unitarian Universalist Association on youth issues. In 2009, the Youth Ministry Working Group released its final report.  Among its many recommendations was to create a committee that could advise the UUA the administration and staff on the Working Group’s recommendations and ongoing issues of youth ministry. At each of our meetings, we discuss new initiatives in the UUA, exciting new programs in our districts and congregations, and brainstorm ways to improve our beloved community of youth.  We are a mix of youth and adults from across the nation, and we are all delighted to have the chance to serve you.  Here’s a little more about who we are:

Michael Han

I’m from the Pacific Northwest District.  I’ve been serving at the national level ever since my first GA in 2006.  Since then, I’ve served GA Youth Caucus Staff as FUNTIMES Manager and then as Dean, as well as serving as one of the members of the Youth Ministry Working Group.  I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Washington, and in my spare time I enjoy cycling and repairing old computers.

Rev. Elizabeth Stevens

I’m a lifelong UU, an ordained parish minister, and an energetic advocate for youth and youth ministry.  I’m also the mom of two UU youth, a musician and a gardener.

Katherine Allen

I am a member of Unity Church-Unitarian. Besides being on YMAC, I am also active in my church’s youth group and also on a local interfaith youth leadership team.

John Coakley

I came to the Unitarian Universalist faith as a teenager in the 1990s and became a youth and young adult leader at the local, district, and continental levels. Currently, I am a Ph.D. Candidate in History writing a dissertation about pirates. I live in Boston with my partner, Kate, and two very large cats.

Sonrisa Alter

Raised in Portland, OR and recently relocated to Ohio for school, I’m a first-year college student with a passion for community building. I first experienced vibrant youth ministry at a Pacific Northwest District con in 2008, and I’ve been hooked ever since. When I’m not with UUs, I can often be found working for my student cooperative, singing in an a cappella group, promoting the sex-positive movement, and looking for cats to snuggle.

Karen Letourneau

I am a member of the North Parish of North Andover, Ma.where I have taught OWL & been a COA mentor. I am the parent of two young adults who were involved in youth groups, OWL & COA. I am a Family Nurse Practitioner providing primary care to adolescents

Alaina Gunter

I attend Pathways Church in Southlake, Texas and this is my first year on the YMAC. I’m so excited to be a part of such a wonderful group of people who are doing such great work in youth ministry.
