Organizations for Partnership and Resources on LGBTQ Youth

Unitarian Universalist Association

The UUA is a go-to resource for support and help making your congregation more inclusive of LGBTQ youth, doing effective social justice work on the issues LGBTQ youth face, and more. Youth & Young Adult Ministries, LGBTQ Ministries, and your district office are all prime sources of support and guidance. This list came from the UUA’s Multicultural Ministries office. Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays (PFLAG)

PFLAG promotes the health and well-being of LGBT persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill-informed public; and advocacy to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. PFLAG provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. www.pflag.org

Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN)

GLSEN, the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe learning environments for students, envisions every child respecting and accepting all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. www.glsen.org

The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project is a national organization focused on crisis and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. Trevor operates the only national crisis lifeline for LGBTQ teens and young adults, offers instant message counseling via TrevorChat and the is largest online social network specifically for young LGBTQ people, TrevorSpace.  Family Acceptance Project

The Family Acceptance Project is a community research, intervention, education and policy initiative that works to decrease major health and related risks for LGBT youth, such as suicide, substance abuse, HIV and homelessness, in the context of their families. The organization uses a research-based, culturally grounded approach to help ethnically, socially and religiously diverse families decrease rejection and increase support for their LGBT children. http://familyproject.sfsu.edu

Gay-Straight Alliance Network

National youth leadership organization GSA Network connects Gay-Straight Alliances and community resources through peer support, leadership development, and training, and supports young people in starting, strengthening, sustaining, and building the capacity of GSAs. http://gsanetwork.org

 True Colors

True Colors is a non-profit that works with other social service agencies, schools, organizations, and within communities to ensure that the needs of sexual and gender minority youth are recognized and competently met. The organization trains more than 2400 people annually, organizes the largest LGBT youth conference in the country with more than 2000 attendees and manages the Connecticut’s only LGBT mentoring program.

TYFA empowers children and families by partnering with educators, service providers and communities to develop supportive environments in which gender may be expressed and respected. TYFA envisions a society free of suicide and violence in which ALL children are respected and celebrated.

Advocates for Youth

Advocates for Youth champions efforts to help young people make informed and responsible decisions about their reproductive and sexual health. Advocates believes it can best serve the field by boldly advocating for a more positive and realistic approach to adolescent sexual health.

The Safe Schools Coalition
