Still – and Always – Becoming

by Kayla Parker

Becoming: A Spiritual Guide for Navigating Adulthood was created to be a consistent companion for us in the times when we need spiritual accompaniment.

Whether in solitary reflection or group worship, this little book is here to be companion, guide and hard surface to lean or dance on.

Becoming was created with the constant transition of young adults in mind – and the awareness that change is a constant for adults of all ages. I compiled the readings and reflections as a Unitarian Universalist (UU) young adult myself, and it includes words from UUs and non-UUs of the past and present, including personal reflections from other UU young adults. These personal reflections are grouped with opening and closing words, as well as prayers and poems, into the following topics:

  • Growth and Change
  • Passion and Purpose
  • Community
  • Roots
  • Family, Friends, and Loves
  • Identity
  • Lost and Found
  • Spirit of Life
  • Justice and Creation
  • Hope and Praise

Hymns and songs are also included at the end of the book, to expand and deepen the type of meditation, prayer, reflection or worship you might partake in.

How do you get a free copy?

Editor’s Note: This offer expired in the Spring of 2015.

This book is made possible by John F. and Susan B. Smith’s leadership, generosity, and commitment to UU young adult spirituality and service.. Because of its particular goal of serving the UU young adult demographic,  Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) will send a copy of it to those who ask free of charge. (Until the copies run out, of course.)

Here are the details: the UUA has printed 3000 copies of Becoming, nearly a third of which are going to young adult, campus ministry and recently bridged groups of young adults that the UUA has contact information for.

The rest could be going out to you. For free. The UUA’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries wants to get them to you, but they need your information to send them out. Here are the details:

  • If you are a part of a young adult group that the UUA might not have recent (or any) information on, you can order copies for your group using this form.
  • If you are a Unitarian Universalist young adult not affiliated with a young adult group, you can also request a copy for yourself using this form.

Request a copy for yourself (and if applicable, your whole group) today!
And please keep in mind that we are receiving large volumes of requests and that it will take time to process these requests and ship the books.  We appreciate your enthusiasm and patience.

I hope that you are able to receive a copy of Becoming, and that it will become a trusted companion for throughout your days.

In communion, solidarity and love,

~Kayla

Heartfelt thanks to Kayla Parker for her excellent work, and to all those who worked in partnership to make the creation of such a book possible. I also feel gratitude toward those who are supporting the launch, and spreading the word. Deep thanks to the donors who had the vision and generous spirits to provide the funding. Inspiring! On a personal note, several of my extended family members will no doubt benefit from this easy-access “entry point” to the UU faith.

I tried the link for the form, but it didn’t work. Suggestions?
