Stories by Young Adult Unitarian Universalists with fierce faith

Fiercely UU is a blog series written by Unitarian Universalist (UU) young adults telling their stories about what our faith requires of us and how they follow that call. To be fiercely UU is to proclaim human worth and interdependence. In an individualist, greed-based, shame and fear fueled white supremacist patriarchy, these stories say no to isolation and oppression and yes to radical love and covenanted connection.

The Disinherited, by Joseph Boyd

…These two beautiful souls showed me a violent, tender longing, a rage that kept their heart ablaze, their body tense, their face fierce. I knew that look. I’ve seen it many times. It’s the look of the disinherited…

Love, Grace and Salvation, by Elizabeth Mount

I grew up in the Unitarian Universalist faith, which told me that every person is sacred, and that the sacred connections between us form an interdependent web. Sounds nice, until I started to really think about what that means

Choosing to leave the system, by Jessica

I was a sixth grader, big glasses and crooked teeth, always hiding my messy hair behind a book. I would sit in Social Studies class and the kid who sat in front of me would turn around once or twice a class period, and say “Ching Chong” to me…

Showing up in Full, by KC Slack

I remember being overwhelmed the first time I attended the Ohio Meadville District Summer Institute. Of course meeting that many people for the first time was intense, as was having so many workshop options and such full days, but none of this was what most struck me. What I got stuck on – honestly, what I stay stuck on – was the freedom of Unitarian Universalist young people.

Sitting in for Democracy  by Laura Williams

Last month I sat on the steps of the U.S. Capitolwith 300 others singing, chanting, and eventually being arrested, to send a message to Congress: amend the Constitution to get big money out of politics and restore the right to vote for all Americans.

Redefining Bravery by Em Kianka

When my body enters into the state most often referred to as fight, flight, or freeze, I am a freezer. And I have always, from the bottom of my heart, wanted to call myself a fighter.

Redeeming Retail by Amelia Diehl

In one light, I am participating in undiluted, raw commodity capitalism. But in another light – one lit by a UU chalice –  I refuse to let the commodified, materialistic, consumerist, capitalist system create a culture of disconnect and disregard.
