New Orleans Service Trip by Emily Parker On this small lot in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, organic vegetables grow in rows. Honey bees housed in hives on the lot buzz by, and a bench constructed between cinder blocks doubles as a flower planter. Inside a modest greenhouse, a hodgepodge of reclaimed bathtubs support an aquaculture, growing fish and fertilizing plants symbiotically. David Young, the man behind this and many other community gardens in the Lower Ninth Ward, is taking me and seventeen other Juniata College students on a tour. Spending our spring break in New Orleans for a week of interfaith service and learning, we have just finished our first day of…

Multicultural Support Team Moves Toward Justice

In honor of the Standing on the Side of Love 30 Days of Love 2016 campaign, Steven Ballesteros speaks up about the important work of supporting Youth of Color.  As a Unitarian Universalist young adult of color I have at times lacked a sense of belonging and of being in right relationship in this faith. I know I am not alone in this feeling. Luckily, there are places in which I can feel safe and ways in which I can apply myself. I currently live near Seattle, Washington, which places me in the Pacific North West District of the Unitarian Universalist Association. There I have helped create and serve on the PNWD Multicultural Support Team for…

Love set Ablaze

In honor of the Standing on the Side of Love 30 Days of Love 2016 campaign, Phebe Hawes speaks up about being a light of love in a time of hate. In order to love alike, we need not think alike ~Francis David. This quote got me thinking. I come from a suburban, mostly white, community. For the most part, we look alike. But we certainly do not think alike. And there’s not a whole lot of love either. So I turn to social media. Like many millennials, I spend most of my time online. I, however, spend a majority of that time defending my beliefs to people who don’t agree. I get the feeling…

Get it Off Our Shelf and Onto Yours Now! Becoming: A Spiritual Guide for Navigating Adulthood is a wonderful resource for Unitarian Universalist young adults and seekers alike. Thanks to some generous donors the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) teamed up with Skinner House books to print 3,000 free copies of this slim but meaningful volume. You can read the editor’s promotion of the book here. This book is so popular with young adults, religious educators, parents and grandparents of Millennials and lay leaders that we ran through those 3,000 copies very quickly. You can read about that part of the story here. We are still going to…

Welcome to the Spotlight Series! What makes Chicago Chalice Connection different from many of our young adult ministries? It’s connected to a geographic area rather than a specific institution (such as a congregation or college) and it is led by paid young adult…

Spiritual Activism Leadership Training Comes to Massachusetts The Spiritual Activist Leadership Training program (SALT) was pioneered by the Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of California, now the UU Justice Ministry of California. They began in 2011 and have had two separate cohorts of young adults complete the program. These young adults spent a year participating in regular “Justice Plunges” and spiritual reflection that supported them in deepening their understanding of justice issues in California, developing their faith-based leadership and organizing skills, strengthening their spiritual lives, and connecting with justice makers across the state for mutual mentoring. You can read about the first cohort to graduate from the SALT program in this post from 2012. We are excited to announce that…

Standing on the Side of Love is an interfaith advocacy campaign that is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association. This year they are hosting their 2nd annual 30 Days of Love, “a period for intentional action, service, education, and reflection running from January 19 to February 17, 2013.” How can you participate with your young adult or campus ministry group? I’m so glad you asked! I’ve created a guide for young adult and campus ministry groups, with an action or small group ministry session for each of the 4 week themes of the 30 Days of Love. Here’s an outline: Week One: Honor Legacy Adaptations and recommendations for great small group ministry sessions that discuss…
