One assignment our Summer Seminary (#UUSumSem) program students receive is writing a 3-5 minute homily based on a prompt. On Saturday night they presented their homilies to each other, and then voted to select the five they wanted to represent their class during worship on Sunday Morning at First Unitarian Church of Oakland, CA. Here Summer Seminarian Paloma Callo speaks to the lament with which many youth and young adults struggle, “How do we inherit this broken world with grace?” She calls for other generations to hold the hands of the younger generations as they work to shape and reshape the world that was given to them. Watch now as Paloma Callo Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA)…

What Noah Learned at UU Mid-West Leadership School by Noah Rowan I have privilege. White privilege. Male privilege. Cis-gender privilege. Economic privilege. Until recently, I felt guilty about my privilege. I shoved it down and denied its existence. I waited for someone to reassure me that privilege was a made up phenomenon. I watched others do the work but called myself an ally. I never spoke up about the numerous opportunities I received. I couldn’t explain or fix it, so why acknowledge that privilege was existent in my life? Recently, I attended UU Youth Midwest Leadership School in Beloit, WI. This intensive experience, which explored leadership development, social justice, our Unitarian Universalist (UU) faith, and…

Apply to Serve as Youth Caucus Co-Dean and See What You Learn ! by Eric Broner, Co-Dean, Youth Caucus 2016-2017 My week in Columbus at General Assembly was full of many things- questions, answers, memories, regrets, and above all, lessons learned. Not only was Columbus my first General Assembly as a Youth Caucus dean, but it was also my first General Assembly – an experience that has had a huge impact on my life. I think I learned a few things about myself, especially as a leader: 1. Accountability is the number one aspect of leadership. Accountability is equivalent to reliability. Others’ ability to trust in my work, in my leadership helps me get things…
